SPRINGFIELD – The Roseburg baseball team went toe to toe with the Thurston Colts in a Southwest Conference game on Tuesday, but the Indians came up short in a 3-2 loss in eight innings.

Roseburg took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI single by Treven Jacks. The junior’s hit scored Will Reddekopp, who reached base on a leadoff walk and moved to third base by stealing second and later advancing on a wild pitch.

The Indians held the lead until the third inning when Thurston scored twice off of Roseburg starter Chris Stone. After retiring the first two batters, Stone gave up three consecutive hits. The first hit went to Preston Fisher, who stole second on the first pitch to the next batter. Fisher advanced to third base on a wild pitch and then tied the game by scoring on a second consecutive wild pitch by Stone.

A double by Carson Werder later in the third inning put the Colts up 2-1. The Indians rallied to tie the game on a two-out single by Luke Lucido in the fourth and the score remained tied through the rest of regulation.

In the top of the eighth inning, Roseburg loaded the bases with two outs. Lucido was at the plate again and drove a shot hard to centerfield, but Thurston’s Connor Morton got underneath it to squash the Indians’ scoring chance.

Thurston wasted no time in the home half of the eighth. Morton led off with a single and JJ Sargeant followed with a bunt single. Roseburg elected to intentionally walk Fisher to load the bases, but the plan didn’t work out as David Travelstead singled in the winning run in the next at bat.

The loss is the second consecutive for the Indians, who fell to 5-2 in the Southwest Conference standings. Roseburg will host the Colts for a doubleheader on Saturday at Legion Field. Game one begins at 12 p.m.
