ROSEBURG – The Roseburg track and field teams are still seeking that first Southwest Conference win after both the boys and girls’ varsity teams failed to take down Thurston on Wednesday at Finlay Field.
The Thurston boys defeated Roseburg 90-55, while the Lady Colts defeated the Roseburg girls 87-58.
Despite the losses, there were some stellar individual performances for the Indians. Roseburg senior Mahala Norris had a good day on the track, winning both the 400 ad 800 meter races. Freshman Nina Willhoft finished second, behind Norris, in the 800 and gave the Indians a one-two combination.
The Roseburg boys also finished first and second in the 800 meters race. Senior Soren Laney took first for the Indians, while freshman Elijah Hansen took second.
Senior Rebecca Sidlo won the 3,000 meters race by more than two minutes. Sophomore Tyler Sconce and senior Travis LaDuke led the Indians to a sweep of the boy’s throwing events. Sconce won both the shot put and the discus, while LaDuke took first in the javelin.
Other first place finishers for Roseburg include sophomore Jessica Peterson, who won both the shot put and the discus, freshman Hannah Bartlett, who won the high jump, and both the boys and girls 4×400 meter relay teams.
Up next the Indians will host the Jim Robinson Bigfoot Pepsi Twilight Invitational at Roseburg High School on Saturday. The meet includes 17 teams from all over the state. Local teams competing include Roseburg, Oakland, and Sutherlin. The meet will begin with the girls pole vault competition at 10:15 a.m.
