MEDFORD – Roseburg senior Ashley Martin tossed a complete game, four-hitter and drilled a solo home run that proved to be the game-winner as the Indians’ softball team handed North Medford its first loss of the year in a 2-1 contest Tuesday.
The Indians (4-1; 3-1 SWC) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when freshman Samie Bergmann scored on an error by North Medford’s right fielder. Bergmann reached base on a single with two outs and fellow freshman Marinda Carlyle followed with another base hit. Carlyle’s hit was misplayed in right field by North Medford’s Cassie Campbell and Bergmann was able to score.
The game remained close until Martin helped her own cause by hitting a solo home run in the sixth inning to put the Indians up 2-0.
The run proved big for the Indians as North Medford (7-1; 3-1 SWC) tried to rally back in the bottom of the seventh inning. A pair of throwing errors by Roseburg led to North Medford’s only run of the game. Freshman third basemen Jordan Gibson committed one of those errors, but made up for it by getting the final put out to secure the win.
Ashley Martin earned the win for Roseburg, striking out seven hitters and walking none. North Medford senior Sarah Thomas took the loss. She pitched all seven innings, gave up six hits and only one earned run, walked none and struck out nine.
The win moves Roseburg into a tie for second place with North Medford and Grants Pass. The Indians are back to action on Saturday with a visit to South Eugene for a doubleheader. Game one starts at noon.
