ROSEBURG – The Roseburg baseball team built up a six-run lead against South Eugene on Tuesday, but needed to rally in the later innings to secure an 11-8 win for their fourth consecutive victory.
The Indians squandered a 7-1 lead in the sixth inning, when South Eugene scored seven runs to pull ahead 8-7. The Axemen did most of that damage with two outs against them. South Eugene scored its first run of the inning on a ground ball that resulted in the second out. From there the Axemen scored six more times thanks to five hits and a hit batter.
Roseburg bounced back to regain the lead in the home half of the sixth. The Indians got the first four runners on base to tie the game. Chris Stone was the fourth batter up and walked with the bases loaded to knot the game at 8-8. Another run scored for Roseburg on a wild pitch and Cam Lierman later drove in the final two runs of the inning on a two-out double to left field.
Will Reddekopp took the mound in the seventh inning to close the game for Roseburg. The senior faced just four hitters, striking out two, to earn his first save of the year.
Roseburg sophomore Cody Johnson took the win after relieving Stone, who only allowed three hits and one run over his first five innings of work before getting roughed up in the sixth. South Eugene used three pitchers against the Indians. Reliever Patrick Pierson took the loss after giving up three of the four runs scored in the sixth inning.
Roseburg has now won four straight games and have started the conference season 4-0 for the first time since 2014. The Indians will try to extend their winning streak with a doubleheader at South Eugene on Saturday. Game one is scheduled for noon.
