GRANTS PASS – The Roseburg baseball team scored 31 runs in a doubleheader against Grants Pass on Saturday and the Indians earned a season sweep of the Cavemen with an 18-8 win in game one and a 13-12 win in extra innings in the nightcap.
The Indians had to comeback in both games of their twin bill. Grants Pass built a 5-0 lead through two innings of game one. Roseburg was getting no-hit by Brennan Lauffenburger through the first three innings, but finally broke through with five runs in the third to tie the game.
Roseburg (4-3; 3-0 SWC) scored in every inning from the fourth on, adding five runs in the fifth, one in the sixth, and seven runs in the seventh.
The Indians had 12 hits off four Grants Pass pitchers in game one. Sophomore Luke Lucido had three hits to lead three Roseburg hitters with multiple hits. Senior Cam Lierman had two hits and drove in five runs to lead the team in RBIs.
Will Reddekopp earned the win in game one, tossing a complete game to pick up his first win of the season.
Roseburg again fell behind Grants Pass (4-3; 0-3 SWC) in game two. The Cavemen scored three runs in the first inning off of Zack Watkins, who gave up three hits and had a balk that allowed a run to score.
The Indians bounced back to put up five runs in the third inning, but Grants Pass tied the game 5-5 with two runs of their own in the same frame. The Cavemen retook the lead in the fourth with three runs and led 8-5 heading to the fifth.
Roseburg’s offense exploded for another seven run inning in the fifth. The Indians sent 11 hitters to the plate and had nine straight hitters reach base to build up a 12-8 lead.
The advantage didn’t last, as the Cavemen continued to chip away at the lead. Grants Pass scored in every inning but the second and scratched their way back from the four-run deficit with two in the fifth and one run in both the sixth and seventh innings.
Grants Pass trailed Roseburg 12-11 going to its final at bats in the bottom of the seventh. The Indians got to within one strike of ending the game in regulation, but Easton Bents hit a two-out double and later scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 12 and send it to extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, Roseburg’s Justin Grubbs drew a two-out walk to put the winning run on base. Lucido hit a single to move Grubbs into scoring position and Chance Beecher drove him in to put the Indians up 13-12.
Chris Stone took the mound in the bottom of the eighth to close out the game and preserve the Roseburg victory. Stone earned his first save of the year and freshman Zack Mandera took the win for his first of the season.
The Indians next host South Eugene for a single contest on Tuesday. First pitch is slated for 4:30 p.m. at Legion Field. Coverage of the game starts at 4:15 p.m. on 1490 The Score and online at 541radio.com.
