WINSTON – The Douglas softball team rode a big first inning to a 13-7 win over Henley Thursday to earn a split against the Hornets in a non-league doubleheader.

Henley won 10-1 in game one of the twin bill, but the Lady Trojans bounced back by taking a 4-0 lead in the first inning of game two. Senior Skylar Coate did most of the heavy lifting, hitting  a three-run homer to centerfield. Coate later drove in another run as the Trojans built a 7-0 through two innings.

Henley got on the board in the third inning on a two-run double by freshman Kaila Mick, but the Hornets ultimately couldn’t keep up with the Douglas offense.

The Trojans improved to a 4-3 record with the split against Henley. Douglas will square off against Glide on Tuesday next week for one last non-league game before conference play begins on Friday.
