MEDFORD – There were a number of high school baseball and softball games cancelled due to the weather Tuesday, but the South Umpqua nine got their season started with a contest in Medford against St. Mary’s.
The weather held out, but the Lancers’ offense struggled to push runs home as the Crusaders pulled off a 4-2 victory. St. Mary’s broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. South Umpqua scored one in the final frame, but could not get closer. The Lancers tallied nine hits in the loss, including three by Tristan Gross and two each by Hunter Buchanan and Jonathan Warner.
The loss drops South Umpqua to 0-1 on the early season. The Lancers travel to Elmira Thursday for a non-league game, before playing two tournament games at Sutherlin High School over spring break.
There are a number of contests on the docket for Wednesday, but already the Roseburg baseball team has postponed its season opener against Westview. According to the team, Legion Field is too wet for a contest at the moment, so the two-sides will try to meet-up later in the spring. The Indians will see their first action of the season in Central Oregon on Saturday as a part of their spring break road trip.
The Roseburg softball team is anticipating a trip to Grants Pass on Wednesday to begin the season in a jamboree setting. The teams have postponed the jamboree from earlier in the week. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday.
