SAN FRANCISCO – With the Pac-12 men’s basketball regular season now over, the conference coaches have voted on post season awards and Oregon head coach Dana Altman was named the John R. Wooden Coach of the Year award winner on Monday night, claiming the honor for a third time in four seasons.

Altman guided the No. 8 Oregon Ducks to their first Pac-12 title since 2002 and became the first repeat award winner since Stanford’s Mike Montgomery in 2002-03 and 2003-04. Altman joins elite company in the Pac-12 conference. Only four other coaches have won the coach of the year award three times or more.

Also recognized Monday was Oregon State’s Gary Payton II, who was named the conference defensive player of the year for a second consecutive season. Payton becomes the first player in league history to win the award more than once. He led the conference in steals for the second straight season, ranking sixth in the nation.

Earlier in the day, the All-Conference teams were announced and Payton was also selected to the All-Conference first team for a second time. Joining him on the first team were Oregon senior Elgin Cook and junior Dillon Brooks. Oregon senior Chris Boucher was voted Honorable Mention All-Conference as well.

Oregon freshman Tyler Dorsey was selected for the All-Freshman team, while Oregon State freshman Tres Tinkle was voted Honorable Mention.

The Pac-12 All-Defensive Team included OSU’s Payton and UO’s Boucher.

The other major awards were also handed out Monday. Utah’s Jakob Poeltl was named the conference player of the year, Cal’s Jaylen Brown was the freshman of the year, Colorado’s George King was selected the most improved player, and Utah’s Brandon Taylor was voted the scholar athlete of the year.
