WINCHESTER, OR – The Umpqua men’s and women’s basketball teams finished the regular season at home on Saturday against Clark College with plenty riding on the line for both teams.

The Umpqua women were aiming to clinch a second place finish in the South Region and big nights from Anna Mumm and Maddy Pape helped the Lady Riverhawks do so with a 79-64 win over Clark.

Mumm scored a game-high 26 points and pulled down 12 rebounds, while Pape added 19 points and five steals. Syd Clark chipped in 13 points for the Riverhawks.

Clark jumped out to a 17-15 lead after the first quarter, but Umpqua scorched the Penguins for 25 points in the second quarter and led 40-32 at halftime. The Riverhawks continued to stretch the lead in the second half.

The win, combined with Clackamas’ loss to Chemeketa, means the Lady Riverhawks finish alone in second place and will host a first round regional game to begin the NWAC Tournament. The UCC women will welcome Grays Harbor, the third place team from the West Region, to Winchester on Saturday, March 5 at 3 p.m. The winner of the contest advances to the NWAC quarterfinals held in Everett, WA.

The Umpqua men needed a lot of dominoes to fall in their direction in order to make the NWAC Tournament, and while the Riverhawks beat Clark 84-79, they didn’t make the post season.

The UCC men built a 14-point lead in the first half, but had to hold off the Penguins in the second half. The Riverhawks had three players finish in double figures, led by Jaylen Gerrand with 24 points.

The Riverhawks finished the season one-game out of the race for a post season berth. UCC needed Chemeketa to lose to Clackamas to force a three-way tie for the final playoff spot, but the Storm beat the Cougars 103-87 to clinch the final spot out of the South Region.
