PORTLAND – The Roseburg wrestling team continued its run of dominance against the 6A classification on Saturday at the Memorial Coliseum in Portland, with its third straight state championship.

The Indians claimed four individual champions and had 14 wrestlers place in the top 6 of their weight class. Roseburg finished with 295 points, beating second place David Douglas by 114 points. Claiming individual championships for Roseburg were juniors Layne VanAnrooy and Haydn Maley, who both won titles for the third time in their careers. Joining them was junior Bennett Mesa, who won his second state title, and sophomore Hunter Sparks, who won an individual title for the first time.

Sophomore Brandon Jeffers also made the finals match at 170-pounds, but lost to North Medford senior Wyatt Westfall by a 5-3 decision for a runner-up finish.

Roseburg has now won eight state titles in 10 years, claiming all but two team championships since the OSAA expanded to six classifications. The 295 points scored by the Indians this year nearly matched their best performance over the nine-year run (298.5 points in 2010).

The Indians appear to be in good position to repeat yet again next year. Of the 14 wrestlers that placed at state, only three (Will Reddekopp, Gage Maddux, and Tyler Kienel) are seniors.

The Glide Wildcats finished third in the 3A competition for a second consecutive season, falling short of winning their third state title in four years. The Wildcats finished 72 points behind state champion Nyssa and just 10 points behind runner-up La Pine.

It was the second consecutive title for Hargraves, while Hardage won his first.

Other state placers from the Umpqua Basin include Sutherlin’s Andrew Smalley (5th at 195-pounds) and Justin Crum (5th at 220-pounds), and South Umpqua’s Carter Dahl (6th at 160-pounds).
