UMPQUA VALLEY – The South Umpqua boys are headed to the state playoffs for the first time in three years after upsetting No. 7 Junction City Saturday, 51-48.
The Lancers took a 7-2 lead early on, but had to rally to tie the game at 23-23 going to the halftime break. In the second half, the Tigers retook the lead and led 40-35 heading to the fourth quarter.
South Umpqua once again rallied and went on a 13-6 to take a 48-46 lead with just over a minute to play. The Lancers lead was stretched to three points on an Alex Kelly free throw in the final second.
Cody Gray scored 30 points to lead the Lancers in the victory. South Umpqua will next face top-seed Philomath on the road in the first round on Saturday.
The Yoncalla boys were also winners on Saturday, as the undefeated Eagles advanced to the quarterfinals of the 1A playoffs with a 73-45 win over Triangle Lake. Yoncalla improved to 27-0 with the win and made it back to the championship tournament. Last year the Eagles lost their quarterfinal game, but responded with back-to-back wins to finish fourth in the state.
Up next for Yoncalla is a showdown with Damascus Christian in the quarterfinals on Thursday. The 1A state championship tournament is held at Baker High School in Baker City.
The North Douglas girls will also be in Baker City for the 1A state championship tournament. The Lady Warriors defeated Powder Valley 43-36 on Friday and advanced back to the tournament site for a third-straight season. The No. 3 Lady Warriors will face No. 6 Condon/Wheeler in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
The Roseburg girl’s basketball team found out its first round match-up over the weekend. The No. 17 Indians are headed on the road for the first round of the 6A state playoffs and will take No. 16 Tualatin on Tuesday. The game will be broadcast on 1490 The Score and streaming online at 541radio.com. Pregame coverage starts at 6:15 p.m.
The season came to an end for a pair of local teams over the weekend. The Elkton girls lost 64-45 at Condon/Wheeler in the second round of the 1A state playoffs Friday. The Oakland boys fell 53-40 at Regis in the first round of the 2A state playoffs Saturday.
