PORTLAND – The Roseburg wrestling team is in good position to win its third straight state championship on Saturday at the state meet in Portland. The Indians are in first place with 159 points and have eight wrestlers in the semifinals, still fighting for an individual state title.

Matches start up again at 9 a.m. in Portland, with the championship semifinals beginning around 10:15 a.m. In the semifinals for Roseburg are Hunter Sparks, Bennett Mesa, Austin Harris, Layne VanAnrooy, Matthew McDowell, Brandon Jeffers, Gage Maddux, and Haydn Maley. Among that group, VanAnrooy and Maley are both going for their third state title in three years. 

Roseburg also has a number of wrestlers still in contention to finish on the podium at the state meet. Thomas Spence, Shane Sabins, Cody Pickle, Tyler Kienel, Garrett Russell, Terell Jacks, Cam Campbell, and Will Reddekopp are all one win away from placing.

The Glide Wildcats had an impressive finish to the first day of action at the state meet. The Wildcats are in second place behind Nyssa, which leads the 3A classification by 32 points. Glide will try to make a late push for the team title with four wrestlers in the semifinals. Those athletes are Zach Holland, Ryland Parazoo, Dylan Potter, and William Beard. The Wildcats also have five wrestlers still alive in the consolation brackets.
