PORTLAND – The high school state wrestling meet begins Friday at 9 a.m. at the Memorial Coliseum in Portland. Competitors from seven Umpqua Valley schools will take part in the event, with the Roseburg Indians and Glide Wildcats the most heavily represented.
The Indians have 19 wrestlers qualified for the state meet, including two-time individual champions Layne Van Anrooy and Haydn Maley. Roseburg has a chance to win its third straight state championship and seventh in nine seasons. To get there, the Indians will need to have strong performances from their 11 seeded wrestlers, three of which are one-seeds.
Glide has 10 wrestlers heading to state, including senior Dylan Potter, who finished runner-up at 160-pounds last year. Potter is the only one-seed for the Wildcats, who have five wrestlers seeded for the tournament. A team title for Glide would be its third in four years.
