SALEM – The Umpqua women’s basketball team secured its third consecutive trip to the post season with a 93-60 win over Chemeketa on Wednesday.
Umqpua started a bit slow and the Storm pulled out to a 22-18 lead after one quarter of play. The Lady Riverhawks turned things around and outscored Chemeketa 75-47 over the final three quarters.
Sophomore Anna Mumm led the Lady Riverhawks with a game-high 29 points and 15 rebounds.
UCC is still tied with Clackamas for second place in the South Region. The second place team in the region will host a first round regional game in the NWAC post season and if Umpqua and Clackamas finished tied, the Riverhawks own the tiebreaker.
The Umpqua men missed their shot at clinching a post season berth on Wednesday by dropping their game against Chemeketa 101-89. The Storm jumped out to a nine-point lead in the first half and held on from there. The loss is the third straight for the Riverhawks.
Umpqua now will need a few things to fall in its direction in order to make the post season. Chemeketa will need to lose its final game of the year on Saturday and the Riverhawks must win theirs in order to finish tied with the Storm. The Portland Panthers have also gotten into the mix. The Panthers are tied with Umpqua at 7-8 and both teams trail Chemeketa at 8-7. If there is a two-way or three-way tie at the end of the season, an additional playoff game or games will be played on Monday and Tuesday next week to determine the final team going to the NWAC Tournament.
Up next for both Umpqua teams is the regular season finale. The Riverhawks host Clark College on Saturday.
