UMPQUA VALLEY – Wednesday marks the final day of regular season games for high school basketball teams in the state of Oregon. Only the 6A classification has regular season games left to play, while teams at the lower classifications have already started playoff contests. With the post season now upon us, below is an overview of the playoff landscape for teams from around the Umpqua Basin.
ROSEBURG
The Roseburg boys finished the season with a 4-10 conference record and tied for fifth place in the Southwest Conference standings. As of Wednesday morning, the Indians are ranked 36th in the OSAA power rankings and might have a chance of sneaking into a play-in game. The 6A post season field consists of 36 teams, with eight teams taking part in play-in games to decide the final four teams accepted into the 32-team state playoff bracket. The Indians will know whether they make the post season Wednesday night when the rankings freeze at 10 p.m.
The Roseburg girls finished fourth in the Southwest Conference with an 8-6 record and automatically qualified for the first round of the state playoffs. The Indians are ranked 17th by the OSAA as of Wednesday morning, which would likely mean that the team will travel for its first round game. The rankings freeze at 10 p.m. Wednesday and the Roseburg girls will play in the first round on Tuesday, March 1.
SUTHERLIN
The Sutherlin girl’s basketball team claimed its second consecutive Sky-Em League championship with an undefeated league record. The Lady Bulldogs went 23-1 overall this year, with their only loss coming against a team from California. They are now waiting for the play-in round to take place and will find out their first round opponent by this weekend. As the 7th ranked team according to the OSAA, the Lady Bulldogs will host a first round game on March 4.
The Sutherlin boys finished tied for fourth in the Sky-Em League and ranked 24th by the OSAA. The Bulldogs held out hope that their ranking would get them into a play-in game as an at-large team, but the they missed the cut and finished their season with an 11-13 overall record.
SOUTH UMPQUA
The South Umpqua boys finished third in the Far West League and 27th in the OSAA rankings. The Lancers ended the season with an exciting buzzer-beating victory over Brookings-Harbor and will try to carry that momentum into a play-in game at Junction City. Per OSAA requirements, South Umpqua’s play-in game will be held on or before Saturday, February 27.
The South Umpqua girls finished the season with a 2-21 overall record and went 1-9 in Far West League games.
DOUGLAS
The Douglas girls won back-to-back league playoff games to earn the second-seed out of the Far West League and a home play-in game later this week. The Lady Trojans host Newport, the fourth place team out of the Oregon West Conference. The play-in game will take place on or before Saturday, February 27.
The Douglas boys did not make the post season after finishing fifth in the Far West League with a 9-14 overall record.
GLIDE
Neither Glide basketball team qualified for the post season. The boys finished 3-22 overall this year and in sixth place in the Mountain Valley Conference. The girls were 12-13 overall this year, but finished fifth in the conference standings with a 5-10 record.
OAKLAND
The Oakland boys won the Mt. View Conference league tournament to take the top seed going into the state playoffs. The Oakers drew a tough matchup against top-seed Regis in the first round on Saturday.
The Oakland girls finished fourth in the Mt. View Conference, one spot shy of earning a playoff berth. The Lady Oakers finished the season 12-14 overall.
1A STATE PLAYOFFS
The 1A state playoffs are already underway and here is a look at the local teams that are in the action.
ELKTON
The Elkton girls finished second in the 1A Skyline League and beat McKenzie 62-32 at home in a first round playoff matchup. The Lady Elks move on to the second round where they square off against Condon/Wheeler on the road Friday.
NORTH DOUGLAS
The North Douglas girls won the Skyline League tournament championship to claim the top seed for the state playoffs. The Lady Warriors had a first round bye and will host Powder Valley on Friday at 6 p.m.
YONCALLA
The Yoncalla boys finished off an undefeated season with a pair of easy victories in the 1A Skyline League tournament. The Eagles are 26-0 on the year and ranked 1st overall by the OSAA. Yoncalla received a first round bye and will host a second round game on Saturday against the lowest ranked team still in action.
