EUGENE – On Wednesday, the Umpqua Lady Riverhawks did what no team has done all season. The UCC women took down the previously undefeated Lane Titans 98-83. Sawyer Kluge scored a game-high 35 points to lead the Riverhawks in snapping Lane’s 25-game winning streak.

Umpqua took a nine-point lead in the first quarter and stayed in front of the Titans the rest of the way. The Riverhawks shot nearly 50-percent for the game and made 13-of-28 3-point shots to edge Lane 39-18 in points scored from beyond the arc. UCC also heavily out-rebounded the Titans, winning the battle on the glass 56-33.

The Riverhawks had three players finish in double figures, led by Kluge. Tasia Bilbrew added 18 points and Maddie Pape chipped in 13. Anna Mumm scored nine points and had 12 rebounds, but played only 20 minutes of the contest.

Roseburg High School graduate Shelby Snook led Lane with 33 points. Jordan Kimbrough was the only other Titan’s player in double figures with 15.

The win helps the UCC women control their own destiny for the post season. The Riverhawks are still in second place, just a half-game ahead of third place Clackamas and 1.5 games ahead of Clark and Chemeketa, which are tied for fourth. Only the top four teams continue the season into the conference playoffs.

LANE 83, UMPQUA 80
The Umpqua men slipped out of a playoff spot with an 83-80 loss to Lane on Wednesday. The Riverhawks fell into fifth place in the South Region with the defeat. The score was just a 3-point difference after the first half of play and both sides played even in the second half.

The statistics were nearly even throughout the game. The biggest statistical difference was in turnovers, where UCC committed 21 compared to just 14 for Lane.

The loss hurts the Riverhawks’ chances of making the post season. UCC falls behind Chemeketa for the final playoff spot from the South Region by a half game.

The Umpqua men and women have the next week off and continue the home stretch of the regular season on Tuesday with a road contest at Chemeketa.
