CORVALLIS – Oregon State freshman Stevie Thompson Jr. made three consecutive free throws with 0.1 second left in the game to give the Beavers a 71-69 victory over Utah and snap the Utes 5-game winning streak on Thursday.

Thompson’s free throws capped off a wild finish at Gill Coliseum. Oregon State trailed 60-50 with 7:44 left to play, but the Beavers went on a 14-3 run to regain the lead. Thompson had the final five points of that run and finished with 13 points.

Utah tied the game at 66-66 on a Brandon Taylor 3-pointer with :43 seconds remaining, but on the next possession, Gary Payton II found Jarmal Reid wide open under the hoop for an easy bucket to put the Beavers back in front by two.

Reid was playing for the first time since being suspended four games for tripping a referee. His bucket looked like it would be the difference in the game, until he fouled Utah’s Jordan Loveridge on a 3-point shot with 2.2 seconds on the clock. Loveridge made all three free throws to give the Utes a 69-68 lead.

Oregon State was down to a final heave from mid court, but Thompson was fouled while leaping across the Beavers logo and was sent to the line with the chance to win. He finished the night 6-of-6 from the charity stripe.

Gary Payton II led Oregon State with 20 points, six rebounds, and seven assists. Jakob Poeltl led Utah with 20.

The Beavers will host Colorado on Saturday.
