ROSEBURG – Senior Brian Schireman dropped 11 points in a big first quarter for the North Medford boy’s basketball team and the Black Tornado cruised to a 62-46 win over Roseburg on Tuesday night.
The Black Tornado built a 21-9 lead in the first quarter thanks to three 3-pointers from Schireman, who finished with six 3’s and a game-high 25 points. North Medford finished the quarter on a 17-4 run after Roseburg took its only lead of the game at 5-4.
North Medford (15-3; 5-2 SWC) took a 23-point lead in the third quarter for its largest advantage over Roseburg (7-11; 2-6 SWC). Yet, the Indians never stopped fighting back. If not for the lopsided first quarter, the contest might have led to an exciting finish. The Black Tornado only outscored the Indians 41-37 over the final three quarters.
Roseburg was led by senior JD Fairbairn, who scored 14 points, including eight in the second quarter. No other Roseburg player finished in double figures.
The Indians face Sheldon next. The Irish will host Roseburg on Friday at 7 p.m.
