The two-time defending 4A state champion Sutherlin Lady Bulldogs rode a big second quarter to a 65-39 victory over Brookings-HarborÊTuesdayÊnight for their 13th victory of the season, against just one loss.

A 17-5 run in the second period broke open a one-point game and the Lady Bulldogs pulled away in the second half for what looked like an easy win, but it was far from it. The defending Far West League champion Bruins went toe-to-toe with tenacious defense, but junior transfer Taylor Stricklin had her biggest game of the year with 26 points. ÊSophomore Harlee Baker had 17 and Kayce Mock had 16.

Sophomore Abby Farmer led Brookings with 12 points and her sister senior Drew Farmer had 10.ÊThe Bruins fell to 6-4 with three more games before they get into league play on the 15th.Ê

Sutherlin will go into Sky-Em League play with a nine-game winning streak and a record of 121-3 over the last 4 1/2 seasons. They have also won 43-straight league games as they get ready to head for Sisters onÊFriday Jan. 15thÊfor their conference opener.

Brookings led the Sutherlin boys by seven points at halftime, but the Bulldogs came out in the third quarter and outscored the Bruins 21-8 to take the lead and never lost it on the way to a 47-38 victory.

The Bulldogs had three players in double figures with Cody Brownson getting 16 points, Wryland McKnight 13 and Jackson Shelton 11. Brandon Curtis had 13 points for the Bruins.

The Bulldog defense held Brookings to just five points in the fourth quarter to protect the lead. ÊThe win gives Sutherlin an 8-6 record and Brookings drops to 4-6.
