After a slow start to the contest, the Roseburg and Thurston boyÕs basketball teams battled to a dramatic finish that saw the Colts pull off a 48-43 victory to start Southwest Conference play on Tuesday.Ê

Both offenses failed to find a groove early on and ThurstonÕs Decker Tovey scored the gameÕs first points with 4:10 left on the first quarter clock. RoseburgÕs first basket came on a 3-pointer from Hunter Paschke with 3:11 left in the first quarter and it would the IndiansÕ only points as the quarter ended with the score 6-3.Ê

The Indians heated up as the game progressed and took as much as a five point lead in the second quarter, but finished the first half trailing 19-17.Ê

The remained close throughout the second half. The score was tied on four occasions in the third quarter, including as the quarter came to a close when the Colts and Indians were tied 32-32.Ê

RoseburgÕs Stephen Patoine tied the game for the last time on a 3-pointer with 1:16 left in the game, but from there Thurston (5-6; 1-0 SWC) outscored the Indians 6-1 for the win. ThurstonÕs Kishon Lange knocked down two free throws with :2.6 seconds remaining to ice the victory.Ê

Paschke scored a season-high 12 points to lead Roseburg (5-6; 0-1 SWC) and Patoine added 10. ThurstonÕs Devante Bailey scored a game-high 14 points and Cade Bates chipped-in 13 for the Colts.Ê

The Indians will next host the Sheldon Irish (7-4; 0-1 SWC) on Friday at Umpqua Community College. The game begins at 7 p.m. and pregame coverage starts at 6:45 p.m. on 1490 The Score.
