The Sutherlin boys and girls basketball teams both advanced to the semifinals of the Astoria Invitational Tournament Monday.

The Lady Bulldogs improved to 10-1 for the season with a 39-24 victory over Columbia River High School from Vancouver, WA.Ê

Taylor Stricklin lead the Bulldogs with 15 points and 13 of those came in the second half. Kayce Mock had nine and Harlee Baker added seven for the Bulldogs.Ê But it was the defense that was spectacular for Sutherlin, shutting out the tall Chieftans in the first quarter and holding them to six points in each of the final two periods.ÊColumbia River, a school of over 1,300 in the Vancouver metro area, dropped to 3-4 for the season.

Sutherlin will play Sandy Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. in the semifinal round of the tournament.

The Sutherlin boys ran away from an 11-4 lead over 2A Knappa, outscoring the Loggers 41-14 in the second and third quarters on the way to an easy 60-38 victory.

The Bulldogs had three players in double figures and another just missed. Wryland McKnight had a big night with 19 points including 11 in the second period. Cody Brownson had 11 and Jackson Shelton added 10 with three 3-pointers. Bowen Briggs was a point shy of double figures with nine.

Sutherlin improves to 6-5 for the season, while Knappa falls to 4-4.Ê The Bulldogs play in the semifinals Thursday night against Astoria at 8:30 p.m. at the Astoria High School Brickhouse Gymnasium.
