ROSEBURG – The Roseburg Indians girls basketball team couldn’t recover after the Corvallis Spartans came out firing in the first quarter. The Spartans jumped out to an early 14-3 lead over the Indians and never looked back. Roseburg lost 30-67 Friday night and fell to 1-3 on the season.

Corvallis used its height and athleticism to apply full court pressure on the Indians, causing a lot of turnovers and prevented them from getting any good looks on offense. After the first quarter the Spartans led 20-3. The Spartans are coming off a third place finish in the state playoffs last year after losing by one point against eventual 5A state champion Silverton.

Head coach Richard Robles said “We just came out really flat tonight, they pounced on us pretty hard in the first quarter.”

In the second quarter the Indians fought back and outscored the Spartans 14-13. Robles said “I really loved the way our girls came out in the second (quarter). They gathered themselves and were more aggressive in second quarter.”

However, Corvallis continually got easy baskets in transition or in the paint. Alexandria Vallencey-Martinson a 6’0” senior led the Spartans with 17 points with strong play in the post. Three other Corvallis players were in double digit scoring. The Indians were led by Amaya Goins who had 14 points to pace the Indians.

The second half was highlighted by a Spartans 19-2 run midway through 3rd quarter as they started to run away with the game the rest of the way.

Robles added “We got our rebounded, outhustled and outshot and that’s just not a good combination.”

After starting the season with a win, the Indians have not dropped three games in a row. They play Eagle Point at home next Tuesday, December 13th at 6:45pm.
