WEST LINN – On the softball diamond, recent South Umpqua graduate Alexis Westbrooks has been a standout and she continues to earn recognition for her hard work. Westbrooks was named the 2nd annual Maddi Higgins Scholarship award winner last weekend and was given $1750 towards her college tuition next year at George Fox University.

The award is in honor of former West Linn softball player Maddi Higgins, who died in a car crash two years ago. Only a junior in high school, Higgins was already a two-time All-State player. The scholarship is open to applicants from Oregon and SW Washington. Candidates for the award must be college-bound softball players and preference is given to left-handed slap hitters like Higgins was.
