ROSEBURG – Things picked up right where they left off as the Roseburg baseball team continued a game against Sheldon Thursday that had been postponed from it’s original date of Tuesday.

Sheldon led Roseburg 6-1 in the top of the second inning on Tuesday, when rain and lightning forced the game to be stopped. The teams finally got back on the field Thursday and the Irish continued their offensive onslaught by scoring five more times for an 11-1 victory.

The Irish piled up 16 hits, six of which were for extra bases, and scored in every inning but the sixth. Roseburg, meanwhile, had two hits in the first inning on Tuesday and managed only one hit the rest of the contest.

Sheldon’s Josh Vitus silenced the Roseburg bats, pitching five innings, striking out five and walking just one. The lone run he surrendered was unearned. Vitus was sharp on the mound, but had plenty of offensive fire power to back him up. Sheldon was led at the plate by senior Justin Herbert, who had three hits and was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle.

Junior catcher Sam Olsson contributed two doubles to the Irish offense. Fellow junior Zach Diehl and senior Jackson Johnson each had a double as well.

Roseburg’s Grant Ronk had the most success at the plate for the Indians. Acting as the designated hitter, Ronk had two singles in his first two at bats. Will Reddekopp was the only other player to have a base knock.

Senior Chris Stone took the loss after a shaky start to the game on Tuesday. Stone pitched 1 1/3 innings before the game was postponed and was replaced on the mound by sophomore Cody Johnson when the game resumed on Thursday. Johnson pitched the final 5 2/3 innings and surrendered 10 hits and four runs.

Sheldon has now won 10 straight games and is one win away from clinching the Southwest Conference title. Roseburg fell into a tie for third place with South Eugene.

The Indians travel north to Eugene to visit Sheldon for a doubleheader on Saturday. Game one begins at noon and coverage of the match-up starts at 11:45 a.m. on 1490 The Score and online at 541radio.com.
