Van Anrooy is one of three finalists for the award and will go up against Hermiston’s Sam Colbray and last year’s winner Osa Odighizuwa from David Douglas. Van Anrooy helped lead the Indians to their third straight state title as one of four individual champions. It was Van Anrooy’s third individual title in three years of high school wrestling. He will have a chance to become a four-time individual champ in 2017 as a senior for Roseburg.

The other two finalists are seniors and also repeat individual champions. Odighizuwa won his third title in 2016, while Colbray finished off his fourth straight state championship at 195-pounds.

There have been three Roseburg athletes to win at the Oregon Sports Awards in previous years. Most recently, Roseburg standout Gabrielle Kearney was named the track and field athlete of the year in 2014. Other winners include former Roseburg wrestler Mitchell Lofstedt, who was the small college athlete of the year in 2012 and 2010, and Greg Fogle, who was named the prep athlete of the year in 1990.

Other local past winners include David Henry of Oakland, Maranda Brownson of Yoncalla, and Dony Knight of Sutherlin.

The Nike Oregon Sports Awards are held in the Tiger Woods Center on the campus of the Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton.
