ROSEBURG – The Roseburg girl’s basketball team honored three seniors before tipping off against South Eugene on Thursday. The excitement of senior night lasted through the first half, but the Indians let a nine-point halftime lead slip away as the Axemen rallied to win 51-44.

South Eugene outscored Roseburg 23-10 in the third quarter to pull ahead 36-32. The Indians challenged the Lady Axemen in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t overcome the deficit.

Jalen Robles scored 13 points to lead the Indians and Valerie Viramontes and Sammie Bergmann each added seven.

Lindsey Galloway led South Eugene with 15 points and Sydney Bowers added 14.

The loss spoiled the celebration for the three seniors, Viramontes, Isabel Verduzco, and Ashlyn Benedict. It’s also the ninth consecutive loss for the Roseburg girls.

Despite their struggles, the Indians could still make a post season play-in game. Roseburg is currently ranked No. 34 by the OSAA and will likely need to be in the top 36 to reach the post season. The rankings freeze at 10 p.m. on Feb. 23.

Up next for the Roseburg girls is the regular season finale at Grants Pass on Tuesday.
