COQUILLE—The Sutherlin girls suffered from the turnover bug at Coquille Wednesday night, and lack of rebounding led to their second loss in two nights.
The Coquille Red Devils, ranked third in the 3A OSAA power rankings, took control early led all the way in a 47-34 non-league victory at Coquille High School.
Sutherlin had eight turnovers in the first period alone, and the Red Devils took an 18-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Bulldogs trailed by 18 at one time in the third quarter as Coquille got many second chance points off the offensive rebounds to build the big lead. But Sutherlin made a little run in fourth period cutting the lead to 11 and had three chances to cut the lead to single digits, but more turnovers put an end to the comeback attempt.
The Red Devils (18-1, 5-0) held Sutherlin’s leading scorer Taylor Stricklin to just 10 points, 10 under her average, and she didn’t get her first field goal until midway through the third quarter when she finally got a three-pointer to fall.
Freshman Kiersten Haines led the Bulldogs (13-5, 3-1) with 11, including three 3-pointers.
“They pretty much ended the game in the first half when they scored 31 points and most of those were second chance points and free-throws, and you’re not going to win a lot of games playing like that,” said coach Josh Grotting.
Sutherlin will get back into league play Friday night when the Bulldogs visit Sweet Home.
