FARGO, ND – The Roseburg wrestling team represented the state of Oregon well at the 2016 Junior Greco Roman National Championship tournament held in Fargo, ND Monday and Tuesday.

Soon-to-be Roseburg senior Haydn Maley won a national championship in the 195 pound weight class with a technical fall over Isaac Bartel from Iowa. Maley had to win five times prior to wrestling for the national title. He won by technical fall 14-2.

The Indians had four wrestlers competing at the national event. Layne Van Anrooy was the only other wrestler from Roseburg to earn points for Team Oregon. Van Anrooy won the consolation bracket at 160 pounds to finish in third place. The soon-to-be senior lost in the quarterfinals, but rallied back and took the consolation title with an 11-8 decision against Colton Clingenpeel of Iowa.

Other local wrestlers to compete at the Junior Greco Roman National Championship were Matt McDowell and Cameron Campbell. Team Oregon tied for fourth place with California. Illinois won the event.
