ROSEBURG – After a lopsided 15-4 loss to the Medford Mustangs in game one of a league doubleheader on Friday, the Roseburg Doc Stewart’s managed to recover for a 5-2 win in the nightcap and split the matchup to keep their post season hopes alive.

Medford dominated game one, scoring three times in the fourth inning to take a 3-1 lead over the Doc’s. The Mustangs added four more runs in the fifth and another eight in the sixth to claim a mercy rule victory. The Doc’s were out-hit in the contest 13-4.

Game two started with both teams scoring in the first inning. Medford got back-to-back singles with two outs to score first. The Doc’s (14-22-1; 7-11 Area 4) got a two-out single by Will Reddekopp to score Shawn Rigsby and even the score.

Medford (24-15; 8-6 Area 4) regained the lead in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by Nick Sanderson and the Mustangs held a 2-1 advantage until the fifth inning. The Doc’s rallied to score four times in the fifth off of Medford starter Ethan Whitney.

The Doc’s took advantage of three errors in the fifth to take the lead. Chance Beecher got on base to start the inning thanks to an error by shortstop James Turnbull. Shawn Rigsby also reached base when first baseman Nick Sanderson misplayed a ground ball. With runners on the corners, Chris Stone drove in the tying run with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.

The final error of the inning was on another ground ball to shortstop that plated Will Reddekopp and Cam Lierman to put the Doc’s up 5-2.

Doc’s starter Roy Benzel settled in after some early struggles and held Medford scoreless over the final four innings to preserve the win for the Doc Stewart’s. Benzel pitched a complete game for his third win of the year.

The Doc’s remain six games out of first place in the Area 4 standings, but are still just one-game out of a playoff spot. There are only two league games left to play for the Doc Stewart’s, a doubleheader at Willamette Valley on July 19.

Prior to their final league games, the Doc’s will play two non-league contests. Up first the Doc’s visit the Corvallis Gerding Builders Marketmen on Sunday for a single, nine-inning game. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. Broadcast coverage will start at 6:45 p.m. on 1490 The Score and online at 541radio.com on the Doc Stewart’s Homepage.
