MEDFORD – The Roseburg softball team was in a defensive struggle with South Medford Tuesday and came out on the wrong end of a 1-0 game.

Roseburg senior Ashley Martin went toe-to-toe with South Medford junior pitcher Pat Moore and the difference was a fourth inning home run by South’s Katie Meyer. The dinger was Meyer’s fifth of the year and was one of seven hits allowed by Martin. The Roseburg senior also allowed two walks, but finished with eight strikeouts. Moore allowed only one hit to the Indians and struck out 18 Roseburg batters.

The Indians had multiple chances to get on the scoreboard. Roseburg left five runners in scoring position, including the game-tying run in the top of the seventh. Freshman Samie Bergmann reached base on an error with two outs. Bergman stole second base, but was left there as Alexa Ligon struck-out to end the game.

Senior shortstop Baylee Wyscaver had Roseburg’s only hit in the game. Ashley Martin and Hannah Goodin were the only Indians to reach base twice, as both hitters drew two walks against Pat Moore.

South Medford (14-3; 10-3 SWC) moves into a tie with Roseburg (14-4; 10-3 SWC) for second place, but the Panthers now hold the tiebreaker over the Indians.

Roseburg visits Grants Pass on Saturday for a Southwest Conference doubleheader. Game one starts at noon.
